Roofing Warranties Explained

Home improvement requires a significant money and time investment, particularly when it comes to your roof. Without a roof, your home is not protected, and prone to damages and defects. Weigh up your roof warranty carefully before making a commitment.

What Does a Roof Warranty Cover?

Some warranties have complex names that can make it seem legitimate, but if you don't know what it actually means, you can end up in trouble. Don't fall victim to a false sense of security. Take your time, giving the following questions some serious thought before you sign on the dotted line.

  • What type of warranty is offered?
  • What is (and is not!) covered under the warranty?
  • What are your responsibilities under the terms of the warranty
  • What is the actual warranty term?

In general, a roofing warranty should cover:

1. Protection against material defects

Your roof has to withstand Canada's extreme weather conditions, which means that it has to offer excellent performance and weather protection. When your roof starts to show signs of wear and tear, it can start compromising the energy efficiency and comfort of your home.

The manufacturer's warranty should include coverage for defective materials. This type of cover does not technically provide cover for your roof, but rather for the materials that constitute it.

2. Insurance against poor workmanship

Your roof warranty should also help you avoid the expenses, inconvenience resulting from improper installation. It covers your roofer's labor. In most cases, roofing contractors will carry workmanship warranties with varying time frames.

Timeframes on roofing warranties will vary by manufacturer, installer and roofing type. Always speak to the installer for the particulars.
